People think of their mind as a closed room, where they can be 'alone with their thoughts'.
This is not the case.
Some people, who hear voices in their head, are diagnosed as having mental illness.
This may be true, or it may be that they have a better idea of what is going on their heads than most people.
I should think everyone has heard about angels, haven't they? Well, the word angel means messenger. If everyone (according to In Matthew 18:10, Hebrews 1:14 & Acts 12:12-15) has an angel, we should all have contact with them. Otherwise, how are they messengers? Demons, being fallen angels, are also messengers.
Maybe they are messengers because they can put thoughts and images in your mind.
Well, that's the theology out the way. Now lets have a look at experience. Take a look at the list below. Are any of them familiar to you?
*** An almost irresistible urge to do something. Harmful 'somethings' could include self-harm, attacking people, shop-lifting, shouting abuse. succumbing to an addiction. Benign ones could be giving someone money, or a gift, or picking up a hitchhiker.
*** A nudge. Harmful ones include an idea for revenge against someone, good ones include phoning a person you have not heard from in a while.
*** An unconnected thought. An irrational comment on someone that is not related to your actual thoughts. These can trigger lust, anger, hatred, jealousy, paranoia and so on.
*** Your own mental bully. Your mind is flooded with memories of shame and guilt, and thoughts that highlight your failings. Like a human bully, but this one doesn't stop. Even when you are trying to sleep.
Fortunately, there is also your own mental mentor. You get encouraging and supporting thoughts, urging you to greater things.
*** A fantasy. You can have whole dramas playing out in your head that feel like they are real. Arguments, sexual encounters, thoughts of revenge, The whole thing takes place in your mind, but the associated feelings are very real.
*** A fully formed idea. Some scientific discoveries have been made this way. In what seems to be moments, you are aware of something; a plan, an event, story, poem, with everything you need to make it happen, with no obvious build-up.
The point is with all of these, they have no rational cause. No thought process that brings them about. They seem to come from nowhere.
One thing you can try, although it may not work for everyone, is to confront these unwanted thoughts as not your own. You do not have to accept them. The more disciplined you are about which thoughts you listen to and which you reject, you will have, literally, more peace of mind.
I say it may not work for everyone, because I did not do this until after I became a Christian. I had trouble with a bullying voice and could not do anything about it. It went when I was exorcised. It may be that you can only control these beings once you have the Holy Spirit.
